Why go to Kuala Terengganu?

Terengganu is Malaysia's east-coast gem, where the peninsula meets the South China Sea in a run of turquoise water, powder-white islands and traditional Malay-Muslim culture. Its capital, Kuala Terengganu (KT), sits at a river mouth with a charming waterfront, a colourful Chinatown and the ethereal Crystal Mosque shimmering on a man-made island.

Offshore lie some of Malaysia's best islands — Redang and the Perhentians, with coral reefs, turtles and holiday-brochure beaches. Inland spreads the vast Kenyir Lake and rainforest. Give it three or four days, drive up along the coast, and time your trip for the dry season (the islands close during the November–February monsoon).
