How much does it cost to drive between Malaysian cities?
The petrol cost of an intercity drive comes down to three things: the distance, your car's real-world fuel consumption, and the price of the fuel you use. As a rough guide, an average car using about 8 L/100km on subsidised RON95 spends roughly RM4–5 in petrol for every 100 km travelled. That means a one-way drive from Kuala Lumpur to Penang (around 355 km) costs in the region of RM15–18 in fuel for a typical sedan, while a thirstier SUV or pickup can cost noticeably more. What these estimates include — and what they don't
Our figures are fuel-only estimates based on approximate road distance and current pump prices. When budgeting for a real road trip, remember to also account for:
- Highway tolls — PLUS and other expressways add a meaningful cost on long routes such as KL–Penang or KL–Johor Bahru.
- Traffic and detours — festive-season congestion and roadworks increase both distance and fuel used.
- Your actual driving style — speed, load and air-conditioning all push real consumption above the factory figure.
