Understanding car fuel consumption in Malaysia
Fuel consumption is usually quoted in litres per 100 kilometres (L/100km) — the lower the number, the more efficient the car. A typical Malaysian city car like the Perodua Axia or Myvi sits around 5–6 L/100km on paper, a mid-size sedan such as the Toyota Vios or Honda City around 6–7 L/100km, and a seven-seater SUV or pickup can climb past 9–10 L/100km. The figures on each car page are manufacturer-style combined numbers; in real Malaysian conditions — heavy KL traffic, constant air-conditioning, and stop-start driving — most cars use noticeably more, which is why our trip calculator adds a real-world adjustment on top.
What actually drives your fuel cost
Two cars with the same engine can return very different costs depending on how and where they're driven. The biggest factors are:
- Driving environment — city traffic and hills burn far more fuel than steady highway cruising.
- Vehicle weight and aerodynamics — heavier SUVs and pickups need more energy to move, especially at speed.
- Fuel choice — most cars are designed for RON95; paying for RON97 rarely improves economy unless the engine specifically requires it.
- Maintenance — correct tyre pressure, clean air filters and timely servicing can swing real-world economy by 10% or more.
How to use these pages
Pick your make and model above to see its fuel consumption, the cost to fill the tank, cost per kilometre and an estimated monthly fuel bill at this week's Malaysia fuel price. If you want the cost of a specific journey rather than a monthly estimate, use the trip cost calculator, which routes your actual start and destination on real roads and applies the live price of your chosen fuel.
Simple ways to cut your fuel bill
Smooth acceleration and braking, keeping to highway speed limits, removing unnecessary weight, and making sure your tyres are properly inflated are the cheapest ways to improve economy on any car. Combining errands into one trip and avoiding peak-hour gridlock also make a measurable difference over a month of driving.
