🕌 KL to Kuala TerengganuKL ke Kuala Terengganu

Kuala Terengganu is the east coast city people drive past on the way to the islands, which is a mistake. It has a Chinatown of painted shophouses, a mosque that appears to float, an island of traditional boatbuilders, and a food culture built on fish and rice that exists nowhere else in Malaysia.

Waterfront hotels along the river and the Batu Buruk beach strip run roughly RM150–350 a night, and there are simpler guesthouses in and around Chinatown that put you within walking distance of the jetty and the night market. Staying near the river is worth it — that is where the city actually happens.

💡 Weekend tipsTip hujung minggu

  • The weekend here is Friday and Saturday. Many shops and government offices close on Friday, and Sunday is a normal working day — plan your eating around it.
  • This is a conservative state: cover shoulders and knees at mosques and markets, and carry a scarf if you plan to enter a prayer hall.
  • The northeast monsoon runs roughly November to February and brings heavy rain and rough seas. The city is fine to visit, but boat trips and the islands mostly shut down.
  • Keropok lekor is best from the roadside stalls between the city and Losong, not from a restaurant. Eat it hot, within minutes of frying.
Makan panas-panas sebaik digoreng.
