Why do fuel prices differ so much between countries?
The same litre of petrol can cost 100 times more in one country than another. Three things explain almost all of it: taxes, subsidies, and whether a country produces its own oil. High-tax European states like the Netherlands and Norway sit at the top, while oil-rich nations that subsidise fuel — Venezuela, Iran, Libya, and the Gulf states — sit at the bottom. The crude oil itself is a global commodity priced in US dollars, so the raw material costs roughly the same everywhere; the gap you see at the pump is almost entirely policy.
Where does Malaysia fit in?
Malaysia is an oil producer and subsidises RON95 through the Budi95 scheme, capping it at RM1.99 per litre for eligible drivers. That places Malaysia firmly among the cheapest countries in the world for petrol — well below the global average and a fraction of what drivers pay in Singapore just across the border. It also means Malaysian pump prices are shielded from the weekly swings in global oil that move prices in un-subsidised markets. You can track the local weekly prices on our Malaysia fuel price page.
Petrol per litre vs per gallon
Most of the world prices fuel per litre, but the United States and a few others use the gallon. One US gallon is 3.785 litres, so a price that looks low per gallon is really higher per litre — worth remembering when comparing US "gas prices" to the rest of the world. The table above shows both so the comparison is fair.
