Frequently asked questions

How much is RON97 in Malaysia today?

RON97 floats weekly based on the MOPS formula and is updated every Thursday. This week's price is shown above.

Is RON97 worth it over RON95?

RON97 has a higher octane rating, recommended for turbocharged and high-compression engines. For most cars designed for RON95 there is little benefit beyond manufacturer guidance.

Why does RON97 change every week?

RON97 is unsubsidised and tracks global oil and refined-product prices through the automatic pricing mechanism.

What RON97 is and why it costs more

RON97 is Malaysia's standard premium-grade petrol. The "97" is its octane rating — a measure of how much the fuel resists pre-ignition ("knocking") under pressure. Unlike RON95, RON97 is not subsidised: its price floats weekly under the Automatic Pricing Mechanism, tracking the Mean of Platts Singapore (MOPS) benchmark plus distribution and retail margins. That's why the price shown above changes most Thursdays in step with global oil markets.

Does your car actually need RON97?

Higher octane is only beneficial if your engine is designed to take advantage of it. As a rule of thumb:

  • Turbocharged and high-compression engines — many continental cars and performance models specify RON97 (or higher) and can suffer knocking on RON95.
  • Everyday cars designed for RON95 — most national and Japanese models gain little to no measurable benefit from RON97, so the premium is usually not worth it.

The definitive answer is inside your fuel flap or owner's manual, which lists the minimum octane the manufacturer recommends. Using a fuel above that minimum is harmless but rarely improves economy enough to justify the extra cost.

Why the RON97 price changes every week

Because RON97 carries no subsidy, it is the clearest weekly signal of where global fuel prices are heading in Malaysia. When crude and refined-product prices rise, RON97 typically rises with them; when they fall, it eases back. The 12-week trend chart on this page lets you see that movement at a glance and spot whether prices are climbing or cooling.

Premium RON97 variants

Several retailers sell additive-enhanced versions of RON97 — such as Shell V-Power and Petronas Primax 97 — which carry the same octane rating but include cleaning additives marketed to keep engine internals clean. They are priced at the standard RON97 rate. For higher octane than 97, the only retail option in Malaysia is RON100 (Petron Blaze 100), which you can read about on our RON100 price page.
