Why go to Ipoh?

Ipoh, the capital of Perak, is a tin-mining boomtown that aged gracefully into one of Malaysia's most charming stopovers. Dramatic limestone hills wrap around the city, hollowed out into glittering cave temples, while the old town's colonial shophouses now hide third-wave cafés, street murals and heritage kopitiams.

It sits almost exactly halfway between KL and Penang, which makes it the perfect road-trip pit stop — but Ipoh deserves more than a coffee break. Give it a day for the temples, Kellie's Castle and Concubine Lane, and a very good appetite for its famous bean sprout chicken and silky white coffee.

  • Ipoh is the natural halfway stop on a KL–Penang drive — even a two-hour break gets you old town coffee and a cave temple.
  • Do the old town and cafés in the morning; it gets hot and some kopitiams sell out of dishes by early afternoon.
  • You'll want a car for Kellie's Castle, Gua Tempurung and the cave temples — they're spread around the city's edges.
  • Buy heong peng and white coffee packets as edible souvenirs before you leave.
