Why go to Melaka?

Melaka wears its history on its sleeve. Founded as a sultanate, then fought over by the Portuguese, Dutch and British, this little UNESCO port city stacks five centuries of trade into a few photogenic streets. The salmon-red Dutch Square, the ruins of A Famosa, and the temple-mosque-church trio of Harmony Street tell the whole story in an afternoon's stroll.

By day it's museums and heritage; by night Jonker Street erupts into a weekend market of food, trinkets and karaoke. It's an easy 1.5-hour drive from KL, making it the classic Malaysian weekend escape — come hungry, because Melaka's Peranakan and Portuguese-Eurasian kitchens are as much a draw as its monuments.
