  • ✓It rains here more than anywhere else in the country, usually in the afternoon. Do the gardens and outdoor plans in the morning and keep the afternoon flexible.
  • ✓The Lake Gardens are at their best just after sunrise, when the mist sits on the water and the rain trees reflect properly. It is worth the early alarm.
  • ✓Kuala Sepetang is about 30 minutes west. Go for a late lunch of seafood, and take the mangrove boat trip in the late afternoon when the birds come in.
  • ✓Bukit Larut is reached only by government four-wheel-drive jeeps with limited daily seats, and trips are cancelled in bad weather — do not build the day around it.
