A perfect Cameron Highlands weekend — without the traffic

There's a moment on the drive up to Cameron Highlands when the air-con becomes unnecessary and you crack the window instead. That's the whole appeal in one breath: you climb out of the lowland heat into somewhere that feels like a different country, all tea terraces and mist and, for once, a reason to pack a jacket.

The catch is that everyone else wants it too, and there's essentially one road up. Get the timing wrong and you'll spend your cool-weather weekend idling in a hot queue. Get it right and it's one of the easiest great escapes from the Klang Valley.

Go midweek, or go early

If you can take a Friday off, do. Weekends and school holidays choke the road and the tea-farm car parks. If midweek is impossible, leave KL at first light on Saturday — being on the mountain before the crowds is the difference between a calm morning in the tea and a two-hour crawl.

What a good weekend looks like

Tea farm and a pot of tea with scones in the morning, while the valley clouds over below you. A slow afternoon at the markets for strawberries, honey and vegetables to take home. A steamboat dinner when the temperature drops — it's practically the local sport — and an early night under an actual blanket.

Book a room with a heater. It sounds dramatic in a country this hot, but nights up here genuinely get cold and a lot of budget rooms have nothing to take the edge off.

One practical note before you point the car uphill: fill the tank and check your brakes at the bottom. It's a long, steep, winding climb, stations thin out near the top, and you want to be enjoying the view, not nursing a warning light.
