Why go to Kota Bharu?
Kelantan, in Malaysia's northeast corner, is the heartland of traditional Malay culture — a state of royal heritage, crafts and deep religious roots that feels distinct from anywhere else in the country. Its capital, Kota Bharu, is a bustling, conservative city of palaces and museums, a famous women-run central market, and workshops still making batik, songket and the giant wau bulan moon kites.
It's also a place of surprising contrasts: just outside the city, Thai-influenced villages hide some of Southeast Asia's largest Buddhist statues. Add river beaches, waterfalls and food many Malaysians rate as the country's best, and Kelantan rewards the drive out east. Come in the drier months — the northeast monsoon (Nov–Jan) hits this coast hard.
